CENTURY LEAGUE : El Modena Spots Canyon a Lead, Then Recovers to Win

Ernie Wilson took a screen pass from Matt Mitchell and sped 61 yards for a touchdown with 2 minutes 24 seconds left in the game to give El Modena a 27-23 victory over Canyon at El Modena Thursday night.

Canyon built a 17-0 lead in the first quarter before El Modena, which has clinched a Division IV playoff berth, rallied for the Century League victory.

The Vanguards (7-3, 4-1 in league) took the lead for the first time with 8:34 left in the contest when Ryan Holmes caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell for a 21-17 advantage.

Canyon (4-6, 0-5) regained the lead on an 82-yard scoring drive with Brian Jalowiec connecting on a 10-yard pass to Paul Bottiaux with 4:08 left for the touchdown.

The Comanches scored three times in the first quarter, with Casey Wilson hitting on a 33-yard field goal and Greg Jacobs catching touchdown passes of 27 and 30 yards.

El Modena bounced back in the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Steve Krishfied and a 14-yard run by James Clarkston. A missed 32-yard field-goal try with three seconds left in the half prevented El Modena from tying the game.

After El Modena took the lead in the fourth quarter, Canyon made one last try, with Jalowiec hitting Bottiaux with a 28-yard pass on fourth down, but the drive was halted with 36 seconds left to preserve the El Modena victory.
