ROUNDUP : Master’s Stuns Fresno Pacific in Soccer Final

Momir Horvatek and Paul Smith scored Saturday to lead The Master’s College to a 2-0 upset of host Fresno Pacific in the NAIA District 3 championship match in men’s soccer.

Horvatek scored at the 41-minute mark of the first half, giving The Master’s (9-11-1) a 1-0 lead it took to intermission. Smith completed the scoring at the 61-minute mark.

Junior goalkeeper Brian Crosson posted his second consecutive shutout for Master’s, which has won three consecutive District 3 titles. Fresno Pacific was ranked 10th in the nation. The Master’s will begin play in the NAIA finals Nov. 23 in San Antonio.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 76, Glendale 71--Akili Carter scored a game-high 22 points, including five three-point baskets, to lead visiting Antelope Valley in the nonconference opener for both schools.

Darnell Cherry added 21 points for Antelope Valley.

Kenny Collins led Glendale with 18 points and seven rebounds. William Burr added 11 points, including three three-point baskets.

Moorpark 88, Pasadena 79--Elijah Maxey scored 26 points to lead the Raiders to the championship of the Cerro Coso tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale 67, San Bernardino 56--The Vaqueros posted a consolation-round win in the Mt. San Antonio College tournament behind Denise Dal Ponte, who led Glendale (2-1) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard-Westlake d. Alhambra 15-2, 18-16, 15-3--Laura Wolf had 26 kills to lead the Wolverines (14-4) in the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

L.A. Baptist d. Crossroads, 15-9, 15-5, 15-2--Sarah Rameson had 10 kills and Jill De Ruiter had 16 assists for host L. A Baptist (16-0) in a Division V second-round playoff match.

CROSS-COUNTRY

NCAA District 8 championships--The Northridge women finished 12th in the meet at the University of Arizona. Alva Dancel led the Matadors, finishing 54th in 19 minutes 25.6 seconds over 5,000 meters.
