Fifth-ranked Florida State, trying to regain its stature as a contender for the national title, had another blowout Saturday. This time, the Seminoles increased their record to 9-1 with a 70-7 rout of Tulane.

“I guess I’m biased, but I think we should move up,” Coach Bobby Bowden said. “I know an undefeated team is hard to jump. Our claim to fame is we played Miami.”

Florida State scored 10 touchdowns for the second consecutive game, and could improve its ranking because No. 3 Michigan tied Illinois, 22-22.

Charlie Ward threw four touchdown passes in the first half and Clifton Abraham scored twice on defensive plays as the Seminoles took a 56-7 halftime lead.

Ward played the first half before Bowden went to reserves for the second week in a row.

“Tulane has been a beat-up football team this year,” Bowden said. “It was really tough holding the score down.”

The Seminoles have scored 139 points in their last two games. They have won five in a row since a 19-16 loss to Miami on Oct. 3 in the Orange Bowl.

“We have gradually moved more and more into the shotgun and it looks like our thing,” Bowden said. “I’ve got a feeling that the ‘fast break’ offense is our style.”

Ward, who amassed 506 yards of total offense last week in a little more than two quarters, had 205 in the first quarter as the Atlantic Coast Conference champions took a 35-0 lead.

Florida State’s defense, obscured by the offensive avalanche of the past two weeks, shut down the Green Wave with 186 yards total offense.
