Satashi Funatsu
College: Orange Coast
Sport: Soccer
Position: Goalkeeper
Class: Sophomore
Funatsu, an exchange student from Japan, spent most of last season as a seldom-used field player for the Pirates, who won the State title.
That figured to be his lot again this season, except OCC had trouble finding a consistent goalie. In stepped Funatsu and as a result, OCC is in the playoffs Saturday at 1 p.m. at East Los Angeles.
Funatsu had 18 saves as OCC defeated Riverside, 1-0, last Tuesday and had five more saves as OCC beat Cypress, 2-0, Friday to clinch second place.
The two shutouts gave Funatsu three in a row and four on the season.
Other top performers:
Cypress’ Gary Gibbs and Anthony Livingston, who were selected to the all-tournament team at the Barstow basketball tournament, in which the Chargers finished third.
Eric Washington, who set an Orange Coast record by scoring five touchdowns as the Pirates beat Fullerton, 40-15.
