Pomona : Murderer Gets Life Term
A West Covina man has been sentenced for the racially tinged shooting death of a teen-ager at a Diamond Bar “flyer party.”
Jose Aguilar, 20, was given a life sentence by Pomona Superior Court Judge Thomas Nuss but could be paroled after 10 1/2 years. He will spend the first five years in the California Youth Authority and then be transferred to state prison to serve the remainder of his term.
Aguilar was convicted July 28 of second-degree murder in the Nov. 30, 1991, shooting death of Damon Washington, 18, of Diamond Bar.
Authorities said the two confronted each other at a teen-age party attended by 200, at which Washington was helping keep order. After Aguilar hopped a fence to avoid paying a $2 admission fee, he was stopped by Washington, a black, who reportedly made a comment against Mexicans. Aguilar left, returned with a gun and shot Washington.
