BASKETBALL : Crenshaw Wins Season-Opener

With a new cast of players, Crenshaw High easily defeated Garfield, 78-68, Thursday in a season-opening nonconference game.

Center Kristaan Johnson, who played for Montclair Prep High last season, scored a team-high 21 points. Tremaine Fowlkes, who transferred from Culver City High, scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half.

Crenshaw trailed for most of the game, but guard Calvin Valerie hit a three-point shot to break a 56-56 tie with 5:35 left in the game. Fowlkes scored four points as Crenshaw went on a 12-4 scoring spree to take a 71-60 lead.

Garfield forward Frank Aguilar had 24 points to lead all scorers.

Crenshaw was scheduled to fly to Anchorage Saturday to play in eight-team tournament in the Great Alaska High School Classic.
