Pomona : Ursua to Run for Mayor

Share

City Councilman Tomas Ursua has announced his intention to run for mayor in the March 2 election on a platform that calls for “reinventing local government” through major changes in structure and policies.

Ursua, 36, who forced Mayor Donna Smith into a runoff two years ago, said he would work for community policing, an improved climate for small business and comprehensive programs for youth. Ursua has been on the council for four years and is currently vice mayor.

Smith, who has been mayor for six years, has announced that she will not seek reelection.

Bob Jackson, a teacher who narrowly lost a City Council race two years ago, quit as chairman of the Pomona Committee Against Billboards last week to devote his energies to running for mayor.

Eddie Cortez, a member of the Planning Commission for six years, said he is planning to run.

Other announced candidates are Hal Jackson, a youth authority chaplain, and Stewart A. Alexander, a marketing consultant.
