Firefighters contained a brush fire Saturday that burned about 225 acres of North County brush and had threatened to hit a populated area of San Marcos before it was diverted.

Officials with the state Department of Forestry predicted the fire would be controlled and extinguished by 6 p.m. today. At the height of the fire, which was confined to an area west and northwest of Interstate 15 and north of Deer Springs Road, about 280 firefighters battled the blaze.
