One man was stabbed to death and another wounded during an early-morning robbery at a home under renovation, police said Monday.

The identity of the dead man, a 35-year-old Latino who lived at the residence, was withheld pending notification of relatives, said police spokeswoman Maureen Haacker. He died of a knife wound in the side of his head.

Haacker said the incident began about 2 a.m., when the victim and two male companions left a bar in the 500 block of South Main Street and walked to 518 S. Main, the home under renovation where the men said they lived.

Three to four men followed them, entered the residence and demanded money, she said.

One robbery victim, Mario Hernandez, 23, escaped out a rear entrance, Haacker said. Another victim, Gustavo Cardenas, 29, received a minor stab wound and also escaped, she said.

Cardenas received treatment at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, she said.
