BURBANK : Airport May Handle UPS Cargo Service

Share

In an effort to improve its overnight delivery service, United Parcel Service has negotiated an agreement with Burbank Airport to fly out of the airport once a day, airport officials said Monday.

The deal, which has yet to be signed by both parties, would generate at least $70,000 annually in landing fees for the airport, said Mark Hardyment, the airport’s manager of contracts and property. The airport also would profit from fueling fees and rents charged to airport tenants working for UPS, he said.

Hardyment said UPS needed to use Burbank Airport because it has been having difficulty getting cargo from West Los Angeles to its cargo center in Ontario in time to make its long-distance, overnight deliveries.

If the agreement is signed, UPS would begin cargo service from Burbank on Dec. 7. UPS plans to fly a jet once a day from the airport, leaving for its cargo center in Louisville, Ky., at 7:30 p.m., Hardyment said.

Federal Express already operates one cargo flight each day from Burbank Airport.
