Art Takes a Holiday for AIDS Day : Remembrance: Orange County events include concert, poetry reading, and exhibits.

A wide array of activities is planned here to observe the fourth annual Day Without Art, an international event intended to underscore the vast destruction AIDS has wrought in the art world.

* Pavilion Amphitheater at The Lakes, Anton Boulevard and the Avenue of the Arts, Costa Mesa. An outdoor presentation from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. by the Pacific Symphony Brass Quintet, Opera Pacific’s Overture Company, the Pacific Chorale Children’s Chorus, tenor John Nuzzo of the Master Chorale of Orange County, and Ballet Pacifica. The Orange County Philharmonic Society will present Too Many Bongos, a percussion group, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center will present members of the Kirov Ballet. Admission is free. * South Coast Repertory, 655 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. “Vital Readings,” excerpts from literature, plays, news stories and songs relating to AIDS, will be read from 12:15 to 1 p.m. by SCR resident and guest actors, as staged by SCR literary manager John Glore. Free, with a suggested donation of $10 for the AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County. Lunches from Cafe on the Lakes will be sold for $5 beginning at 11:45 a.m. and may be eaten in the theater. * Fullerton Museum Center, 301 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton. “Listen Up!,” classical musicians from throughout Orange County playing works by Liszt and others. 8 p.m. Admission is $5. All proceeds go to the AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County. (714) 738-6545.

* UC Irvine Fine Arts Gallery, UC Irvine, near Bridge and Mesa roads. “The AIDS Show: Community Responses to a Crisis,” a show in all media solicited from the community. Noon to 5 p.m (continues through Dec. 11). Mark Niblock-Smith, an artist who learned in 1986 that he has the AIDS virus, will speak today at noon. Admission is free. (714) 856-8351.

* UC Irvine Student Center, Center Hall Gallery, Bridge Road and Pereira Drive. Some 60 works in the gallery will be draped. “This Is Our Yard,” an AIDS-related series of photographic portraits by Mary-Linn Hughes and Jerry McGrath, is on view from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. (continues through Dec. 4). * Cal State Fullerton, 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton. The Main Art Gallery is closed in commemoration. Panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, an international memorial to those who have died of AIDS, will be displayed at the Titan Pavilion. (714) 490-3880.

* Orange Coast College Art Gallery, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. Gallery closed for the day. “Artists’ Reflections on AIDS” resumes Wednesday and will continue through Dec. 10. Admission is free. (714) 432-5726.

* The Works Gallery, 3333 Bear St., Costa Mesa, in Crystal Court. AIDS-themed installation art by Patrick Sparkuhl is on view from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (continues through Dec. 7). (714) 979-6757.

* Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Drive, Laguna Beach. Where colorful banners normally hang, four black banners will be hung on the museum exterior wall facing Pacific Coast Highway. A large red ribbon, symbolizing compassion for people with AIDS, will adorn one banner. Literature will be distributed by Laguna Shanti, an AIDS service organization.

* Newport Harbor Art Museum, 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach. Jonathan Borofsky’s sculpture, “Ruby,” which sits atop the museum roof, will be draped.
