A school with only about 50 students would have trouble even fielding a five-man basketball team. But, luckily for third-year Coach Zanelli, there are enough boys at Pacific Shores interested in the sport. “The ones who come out to play are pretty enthusiastic about it,” Zanelli said. The Seahawks finished last in the six-team Metro League last season and fifth the year before, but Zanelli is confident his team can move up the standings and qualify for the playoffs this season. “I will definitely say we are better than last year. We have better athletes,” he said. “It’s a fairly competitive league because most of the schools are pretty small, so I’m optimistic we’ll make the playoffs.” The two key pieces in the Pacific Shore puzzle are two-year starter Marcum, who averaged 22 points and 7.5 rebounds last season, and Ross, a four-year starter who averaged 14 points. “Kyle really worked hard in the summer to improve his skills,” Zanelli said. “Chris provides great leadership. He’s also a great rebounder and passes the ball very well.” Zanelli said Boureston and Mosher, who were used sparingly last year, should play more this season.
