PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL
Coach Wayne Fontes of the Detroit Lions moved Rodney Peete back into the starting quarterback job for Sunday’s game against Green Bay, dropping previous starter Erik Kramer all the way to third string.
Fontes promoted Andre Ware to the backup slot and said he will “definitely” get a start before the season ends.
“I’ve seen Rodney play a lot, so I know what he can do,” Fontes said. “Now, I’ve started Erik a couple times, and I know what he can do. I’ve got to find out what Andre can do.”
Fontes said Ware will be No. 2 this week to give him some practice time.
The coach added that just because Kramer is No. 3, it doesn’t mean he will stay there.
“By no means, does this mean Erik’s No. 3 (permanently),” Fontes said. “When this is all over, he might be No. 1, or Rodney might, or Andre might. Or Andre still might be No. 3. It all depends on what happens in the last four weeks.
“I’d start Andre this week, but I can’t do that to him without getting him some reps in the practice. He wouldn’t be ready to start that soon. But if anything happens to Rodney against Green Bay, Andre’s coming in.”
