PLACENTIA : Beer, Wine Sales Approval Reversed

Share

A Planning Commission decision to allow beer and wine sales at a market was unanimously overturned this week by the City Council.

La Superior Ranch Market, on South Bradford Avenue, was granted a use permit by the Planning Commission Nov. 10 for the sale of beer and wine for off-site consumption. The permit was issued on a trial basis, to be reviewed after six months, and on the condition that market owner, Eleazar Diaz, limit sales to six-packs of beer and wine coolers, with no single cans or bottles sold.

Diaz was also required to post a security guard outside his store to discourage customers from hanging around and drinking.

The Planning Commission voted 4 to 3 to approve the application, despite a recommendation from the city staff to deny the use permit. The Police Department also recommended that the application be denied, citing an increase in the number of calls regarding alcohol-related problems in the area.

On Tuesday, Councilman John O. Tynes appealed the Planning Commission’s decision, claiming that there was over-concentration of liquor licenses in that area.

“I’m concerned about the condition placed by the Planning Commission of no single sales,” Tynes said. “That’s an item no one can control.”

The council voted 5 to 0 to overturn the commission’s decision.
