How to Request Cleanup or Report Illegal Dumping

Here are numbers to call to request cleanup services or to report illegal dumping:

* To have debris cleared from streets, alleys or lots within the city, call the Bureau of Street Maintenance: (213) 485-5661.

* The city Bureau of Sanitation offers free curbside pickup for large items, such as couches, TVs and household appliances that city garbage trucks won’t take. Crews will not pick up bulky construction material, auto parts or large pieces of wood. Call the bureau’s “bulky item collection” service at least 24 hours in advance: (800) 773-CITY or (213) 485-4922.

* For lot cleaning in Central Los Angeles areas outside city limits, call the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner’s office: (818) 575-5485. For alley cleaning in the Florence-Firestone, Walnut Park and Willowbrook areas, call the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, road maintenance division: (213) 773-4831. In Athens: (213) 776-7552.

Three additional agencies handle hazardous materials, such as car batteries, chemicals and industrial waste:

* To report dumping of hazardous materials anywhere in Central Los Angeles, call the Los Angeles County Fire Department, hazardous materials control program: (213) 890-4317 or (213) 890-4045. After 5:30 p.m. weekdays and on weekends: (213) 881-2455. Those who call are encouraged to provide a license-plate number and/or physical descriptions of dumpers. In emergencies, call 911 and ask for the Fire Department.

* For investigations of hazardous dumping, call the Los Angeles Police Department, hazardous materials unit: (213) 237-2793 or (213) 485-4011.

* To report hazardous-waste spills into sewer systems, storm drains or on streets or public property, call the city Bureau of Sanitation’s industrial waste control section: (213) 485-5886.

The City Attorney’s Office prosecutes environmental misdemeanor crimes, including the dumping of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Contact the environmental protection section: (213) 485-6286.
