Brett Favre had a hot hand and cold toes Sunday.

With snow covering the ground at County Stadium, Favre led the Green Bay Packers to a 38-10 victory over the Detroit Lions, extending a winning streak to four games for the first time in eight years.

“It was fun playing in the snow for the first time, especially when you win,” said Favre, who passed for three first-half touchdowns as the Packers took a 35-10 lead during their most prolific scoring half since 1983. “It was not too bad. But my toes are still frozen.”

The Packers (7-6) improved their wild-card playoff chances against the Lions (3-10), who had problems with footing and fumbles as a light snow fell intermittently in 20-degree temperatures.

“We’re on a roll. We feel we should be,” said Favre, who completed 15 of 19 passes for 214 yards. “We’ve won four in a row for the first time since I was a freshman or sophomore in high school. It shows we’re coming around.”

Detroit fumbled five times in the first half, losing two. The Lions also lost two of three fumbles in the second half. One of Favre’s touchdown pass plays went 65 yards to Sterling Sharpe, who stopped short of the goal line, was hit by Melvin Jenkins, fumbled, then picked the ball up and scored.

The Packers also got an 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Tony Bennett in the first half after Matt Brock connected with Andre Ware, who had replaced Rodney Peete.

Barry Sanders of the Lions gained 114 yards in 16 carries to become only the fourth back in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons. He joins Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell.

“It doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. It feels like another loss,” Sanders said. “Obviously I’m in pretty elite company. I just wish it could have come at a better time.”

Darrell Thompson, making his first start of the season, ran one yard for a touchdown to end a 65-yard drive on the Packers’ first possession. Thompson gained 84 yards in 18 carries as the Packers rushed for a season-high 166 yards.

The Lions got to the Packers’ four on the next series, but that is where the game changed. Peete fumbled the snap and Johnny Holland recovered for the Packers.
