Position: Outside hitter
Class: Junior
Stroffe led Corona del Mar in kills and hitting percentage throughout the season, as well as in the State Division I title match Saturday against Laguna Beach. Stroffe had a team-high 17 kills, including four in the decisive fifth game of a 15-7, 15-5, 12-15, 2-15, 15-4 victory that gave the Sea Kings their second State title in three seasons and their first national title. Even so, Stroffe was left off the all-tournament team. Three teammates--Lori Newcomer (13 kills, 35 digs), Kristen Campbell (38 assists) and Kim Coleman (eight kills, 16 digs)--made the team, but Corona del Mar Coach Lance Stewart said Stroffe also deserved to be on the squad. Besides the team-leading 17 kills, Stroffe had four aces and, Stewart said, her passing and defense were solid. Tuesday, Stroffe and Newcomer each had 12 kills in a three-game sweep over Stockton St. Mary’s. “(Stroffe) just had a fantastic year,” Stewart said. “I don’t know if she got as much notoriety as she deserved, but she was on a team with six solid players.”
Other top performers:
Karen Benkovsky and Kathleen Bunce, who helped Capistrano Valley Christian to its second consecutive State Division V volleyball title. Benkovsky had 13 kills and seven digs and Bunce had 11 kills, three blocks and a State championship-match record six aces in the Eagles’ three-game sweep of San Jose Sacred Heart Prep.
Nicole Erickson, who scored 24 points--including a half-court, first-half buzzer-beater--to help Brea-Olinda to a 61-28 victory over Woodbridge in the championship game of the Irvine tournament.
Misty May and Jenny Hecker, who led Newport Harbor to a three-game sweep of Aptos for the State Division III volleyball title. May, a sophomore, had 18 kills, and Hecker, a freshman setter, had 40 assists and 12 digs.
Rachel Wacholder, who was named most valuable player of the State Division I title match after helping Laguna Beach reach the championship. Wacholder had 23 kills and 27 digs in the Artists’ loss to Corona del Mar.
