THE TIMES’ 1992 ALL-COUNTY FOOTBALL TEAM : FIRST-TEAM CLOSE-UPS: OFFENSE : BRIAN FINNERAN, <i> Wide Receiver </i>

SANTA MARGARITA / JUNIOR One of the county’s tallest receivers, the 6-foot-4 Finneran was quarterback Sean O’Brien’s favorite target. He caught 73 passes for 1,136 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games. He also had 30 unassisted tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery as a strong safety.

GEORGE SAGEN, Wide Receiver LOS ALAMITOS / SENIOR Sagen has been consistent the last two seasons. He caught 74 passes to earn second-team all-county honors as a junior and has 73 receptions for 1,216 yards going into Saturday’s game. Sagen had three touchdown catches against Esperanza in a 34-14 victory.

TONY GONZALEZ, Tight End HUNTINGTON BEACH / JUNIOR Gonzalez could have earned all-county honors as either a tight end or an inside linebacker. He caught 31 passes for 637 yards and was equally strong as a blocker for the Oilers’ option attack. Defensively, he had 60 lead tackles, 45 assists and three sacks.

JOE IREIFEJ, Lineman MARINA / JUNIOR An excellent run blocker, Ireifej is the best offensive guard in the Sunset League. He is extremely agile for a 255-pound lineman and was instrumental in running back John Marvos’ 1,000-yard season. Ireifej is an outstanding trap blocker with great quickness.

CALEB KEMP, Lineman LOS ALAMITOS / SENIOR The Griffins’ left guard will start his 28th consecutive varsity game Saturday. Coach John Barnes said he’s the most aggressive lineman he has ever coached. “What makes him so good is his combination of toughness and balance,” Barnes said.

BILL McMULLEN, Lineman LOS ALAMITOS / SENIOR McMullen has started at right tackle since the third game of his sophomore season. He combines strength with excellent technique and is considered an outstanding pulling tackle. Among the colleges interested in him are Fresno State, Nevada, Houston and Northern Arizona.

KYLE MURPHY, Lineman EDISON / SENIOR Murphy developed into the Sunset League’s best offensive linemen after moving from Oregon to Huntington Beach two years ago. He is also the starting center on the Chargers’ basketball team. Among the colleges interested in him are California, Oregon and Arizona State.

TRAVIS PULLIAM, Lineman ESPERANZA / SENIOR Pulliam is Esperanza’s best pulling lineman for the “Buck Sweep,” the team’s most productive running play. He is a tremendous run blocker who combines speed with quickness. He’s considering Cal, UCLA, Colorado, Houston and Oregon State.

TIM CAREY, Quarterback LOS ALAMITOS / SENIOR Carey threw 21 touchdown passes as a junior and has 55 career touchdown passes going into Saturday’s game. The secret to his success? “He has all the tools, plus the ability to stay cool under pressure,” Barnes said. “All that on a 6-foot-5 frame. What more could you ask for?”

SCOTT SEAL, Running Back IRVINE / SENIOR Last year, Seal was the most valuable offensive player of the South Coast League and led Irvine to the Division III championship. This year, he’s the most valuable player of the Sea View League and is attempting to win the Division IV championship. Seal has 4,361 career yards.

JIM SEBREROS, Running Back GARDEN GROVE / SENIOR A two-time offensive player of the year in the Garden Grove League, Sebreros gained 1,827 yards and scored 27 touchdowns in 13 games. He holds the school’s single-season and career rushing records, and single-season and career touchdown marks.

DOUG STUCKEY, Kicker NEWPORT HARBOR / SENIOR The county’s premier kicker had 10 field goals this season. Stuckey’s longest field goal was a 34-yarder against Corona del Mar last week. He kicked two field goals in games against Ocean View and Corona del Mar. He also averaged 34.8 yards as a punter.
