U.S. soccer officials have invited three former world champions to participate in U.S. Cup ‘93, a tournament next summer that will be used to gauge national soccer interest and as a dress rehearsal for the 1994 World Cup.

Tournament officials on Tuesday announced the teams and a partial schedule for the four-team round-robin tournament, to be held in six cities June 6-19. Besides the U.S. national team, the tournament will include national teams from Brazil, England and Germany, the current World Cup champion.

“We will use U.S. Cup ’93 as a means of developing our expertise in staging games,” said Sunil Gulati, the tournament director, on a conference call from New York. “Various aspects of game management will be under close scrutiny.”

The tournament may be the only full-scale run-through for the 1994 World Cup, which will be in the United States for the first time. The 24-team World Cup will be held in nine cities, the final to be held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

For the U.S. Cup, only two sites were announced, the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn., and the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. The four other venues will be selected from among five candidates: Soldier Field in Chicago, RFK Stadium in Washington, Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.; the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., and the Orange Bowl in Miami. The Rose Bowl and some of the other World Cup venues were not included because of travel considerations and scheduling conflicts.

All sites except New Haven and Miami are venues for the ’94 World Cup.

The United States won the U.S. Cup last year, against Italy, Portugal and Ireland. The field for next summer’s tournament is markedly better, however, and because games will be played at some of the World Cup venues, international interest is expected to be measurably higher. Of particular interest will be the game in the Silverdome, which will be played on experimentally-grown indoor natural grass.

The U.S team will open the tournament on June 6 against Brazil at New Haven. The only other scheduled match is Germany-England at the Silverdome. Other matches that have been assigned dates but not venues: June 9, U.S. vs. England; June 10, Brazil vs. Germany; June 12, England vs. Brazil; June 13, U.S. vs. Germany.
