Downey : Golf Course May Close During Refurbishment
The Downey City Council approved a plan Tuesday to tear up the Rio Hondo Golf Course and replace rotting grass, shabby tees and to pave cart paths.
No date has been set to start the $4.5-million project, but officials say it could take up to three years to complete if the course remains open. The council agreed to consider closing the 18-hole course, which was built in 1924, for about six months while renovations take place.
An agronomist recommended that grass be completely replanted on the 101-acre course, at 10627 Old River School Road, because the turf is mildewed and soggy. Poor drainage and the type of grass planted were blamed for the problem.
And, after a two-year study, a nine-member committee from the U.S. Golf Assn. recommended moving two tees where golfers run the risk of being hit with errant golf balls and building a storage tank for reclaimed water.
City officials hope that the improved course will attract more business. About 200 golfers each day play the course, said Scott Wally, a golf course worker.
“The new course could make the city some money,” Mayor Diane P. Boggs said.
