FILLMORE : Condor Sanctuary Signs to Be Erected

Share

The city of Fillmore will erect signs directing motorists to the Sespe Condor Sanctuary high in the hills above the city as part of the California Watchable Wildlife Project.

The signs, which are brown with white binoculars, will guide motorists through town to Goodenough Road and up to the Doe Flat condor observation area, near the sanctuary that is located in the Los Padres National Forest about 15 miles north of Fillmore.

Caltrans and Ventura County will also place wildlife signs along California 126 and north of Fillmore, outside the city limits.

“The idea of the program is to encourage the public to get out and view the unique wildlife in this area,” said City Engineer Bert Rapp.

Approval to purchase the signs came during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The National Watchable Wildlife Program began in 1989 and is supported by federal agencies, conservation groups and private business, said project manager Jeanne Clark. Clark said the program’s objective is to help preserve wildlife and wild lands through education and responsible recreation.

“Lots of people may not know where and when to view wildlife,” Clark said. “This program can help the public become informed conservationists.”
