SANTA CLARITA : City Modifies Law on Campaign Funds
A Santa Clarita city ordinance limiting political contributions to $250 per person has been replaced by one containing modifications to conform with court rulings on campaign financing.
The revisions adopted by the City Council in a 4-0 vote Tuesday night limit contributions and loans to candidates to $250 per person for the duration of an election campaign, rather than for a fiscal year, as stated in the previous ordinance.
“The courts ruled that limiting contributions to a fiscal year was discriminatory against challengers and favored incumbents,” City Atty. Carl Newton said. The new ordinance also states that anyone contributing $50 or more shall be identified in campaign disclosure records, and it applies only to candidates for public office, not ballot measures.
