Have Hurricanes Gotten Wind of Heisman Winner?
Does someone at the University of Miami know something about the Heisman Trophy that the rest of the nation doesn’t?
An awards page prepared for the top-ranked Hurricanes’ postseason media guide listed quarterback Gino Torretta as the 1992 Heisman winner. But today is the deadline for ballots to arrive in New York, with the winner to be announced Saturday at the Downtown Athletic Club.
The gaffe by the apparently confident Hurricane sports information office came to light when San Diego State’s student newspaper, The Daily Aztec, requested Torretta’s final season statistics. It received a fax of a page that listed Torretta as the Heisman winner.
“It’s very embarrassing,” said Linda Venzon, Miami’s sports information director.
Torretta is considered the Heisman frontrunner over running backs Marshall Faulk of SDSU and Garrison Hearst of Georgia.
