SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : Toreros Beat Fullerton for First Victory of Season

The University of San Diego’s women’s basketball team got balanced scoring en route to its first victory of the season, 87-64, over Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton. The Toreros (1-3) built a 19-point lead at halftime.

Senior center Chris Enger had 21 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Reserve guard Serena Eiermann had a career-high 14 points and reserve forwards Vicki de Jesus and Charlene Bippes (12 rebounds) had 11 each. Guard Angie Straub added eight assists. USD held a 60-41 edge in rebounds. The Titans are 0-2.

San Diego State shot only 32% from the field, but that was enough to beat St. John’s, 51-42, in front of 476 at Peterson Gym. The Regals (3-1) shot only 25%, making only 15 shots from the floor. The Aztecs (4-0) made only 16 shots but were 19 for 26 from the free-throw line.

Michelle Suman finished with 17 points, Lakeysha Wright had 15 and Christina Murguia had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Pam Oden had 16 and Grace Kelly 10 for St. John’s.

Point Loma Nazarene had more shooting opportunities and made them pay off in a 58-53 victory over Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills in front of 200 at Golden Gym. The Crusaders (5-3) made 25 of 61 shots from the floor (41%); the Toros were 20 for 54 (39%). Lori Carper had 14 points to lead PLNC, while Christy Stevens added 13 and Stacee Eggers had 12 points and 14 rebounds. CSDH is 2-3.
