Walker, 26, served two years as an assistant under former Coach Todd Morse. He has installed a new offense and will go more toward zone defense in his first season. The Saints’ personnel of big, stocky post players and short, quick guards dictated the defensive change. “The players were doing too much free-lancing last year, so we’ve gone to a high-post offense,” Walker said. “We’re moving the ball all over the court better.” The Garcias, two 240-pound post players who are not related, figure to be the focal point of Santa Ana’s offense. Pedro, an immigrant from Mexico, is playing organized basketball for only the second season. He couldn’t speak English when he arrived, but he’s developed into a student with a 3.75 GPA. Gus was a starting offensive tackle on the football team but will need some time to get his basketball legs. Santa Ana opened with a 53-49 loss to Cypress in which the Saints got into foul trouble early. “I watched the video and was real excited about what I saw,” Walker said. “I think we’re going to be an exciting team. Our raw talent from last year is developing. We showed a lot more poise.” Walker thinks the team must improve its shooting and tighten up its defense.
