Hamilton, a six-year assistant at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, replaces highly successful Richard Smith. Notre Dame made a strong run in the Division III-A playoffs two years ago before losing to Morningside, 64-54, in the semifinals. Hamilton, 26, will have the Friars in a motion offense with an emphasis on man-to-man defense. “I’m hoping to play a little more up-tempo, but getting to that mode will take some time,” he said. Hamilton was missing four football players--Smith, Vallas, Jones and Tom Bushman--when practiced started. “They’re a little rusty, and this is a young group with six juniors and two sophomores, but I’m real pleased with the team’s work ethic,” Hamilton said. “The returning seniors are very basketball smart. It’s obvious Richard Smith did an excellent job of coaching them.” Downs has been the team’s biggest surprise, scoring 12 and 15 points in his final two games in the Savanna/Western Tournament. Servite’s goal is to finish among the top three teams in the league and make a good showing in the playoffs. Servite will meet Mater Dei at 8:30 tonight at Ocean View High.
