College: Rancho Santiago

Sport: Wrestling

Class: Sophomore

Tomazic, from El Dorado High School, returned to wrestling last season after two years off and finished fourth in the state as a heavyweight.

But that wasn’t good enough for him. He wanted a State title.

However, Tomazic, who weighed 220 at the most, wasn’t heavy enough to hold his own against opponents who often outweighed him by 30 pounds or more.

So he talked it over with Coach Gary deBeaubien and elected this season to move down a class to 190 pounds, where he would have a better chance to win a title.

“He had a vision,” deBeaubien said, “and he accomplished it.”

Tomazic fulfilled his dream Saturday, when he beat No. 1-ranked Ricardo Garcia of West Valley, 5-2, in the final. Tomazic finished the season 30-6 and also won the Southern California title a week earlier.

Other top performers:

Irvine Valley’s Chris Kostoff, who averaged 30 points over four games in the Riverside Holiday basketball tournament.

Robbie Shelton, who averaged 25 points and seven rebounds as Cypress finished second in the Riverside tournament.
