Share

Erin Martin and the Temple City High girls’ soccer team remain goal-oriented as they prepare for Saturday’s match against Marina in the quarterfinals of the Cerritos tournament.

Martin, a senior forward, broke the national girls’ soccer career-scoring record with seven goals in a 12-2 victory over Glendora last week.

Martin has 31 goals in seven matches this season and 246 in her career. She surpassed the record of 225 held by Carin Jennings of Palos Verdes (1979-83).

“I knew I was pretty close, it was just a matter of time,” Martin said. “It helps take away pressure getting the record this early in the season.”

Martin also had three assists against Glendora to pass Julie Tingle of Agoura as the Southern Section’s career leader. Martin has 110 assists, including seven this season, entering Friday’s nonleague match against Muir. Tingle set the previous record of 104 from 1985-89.

Martin, who has attracted scholarship interest from Stanford and North Carolina, set a state record for most goals in a season with 93 in 1991. She also scored 11 goals in a match to tie another record.
