Sports Center Groundbreaking Set

Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new athletic complex at Cal State Long Beach are scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. The building, shaped like a pyramid and projected to include a 6,400-seat arena, is supposed to be built on what is now a parking lot next to the new performing arts center on Atherton Avenue.

Friday’s event will be more for show than anything else. Actual construction of the complex, slated to open in the fall of 1994, is not expected to begin for several months.

“We’re out there trying to find big donors, and this is a nice opportunity to end the year on a good note and get some attention,” said acting Athletic Director Dave O’Brien.

The state has set aside about $11 million in construction funds, but the university estimates it must raise an additional $6 million to complete the facility. So far, O’Brien said he has received pledges “that are certainly in the hundreds of thousands, but not in the millions.”

The university hopes to find a donor who is willing to part with $2.5 million in exchange for putting his name on the building.
