CHULA VISTA : Boy on Bike Killed by Tractor-Trailer
A 12-year-old boy was hit and killed by a semi-tractor-trailer rig while riding his bike to school Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
Omar Orlando Calvo was hit at 7:55 a.m. about half a mile from his home on Paseo Entrada, authorities said. The boy was taken by helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he died at 8:58 a.m.
Witnesses told police that the boy was riding in a crosswalk at Telegraph Canyon Road and Medical Center Drive. He was riding to Christian Academy of Chula Vista, about 4 miles west of the scene of the accident, Lt. Richard Strickland said.
The truck driver, John Miguel Butler, 44, an independent contractor from Lakeside, was eastbound on Telegraph Canyon, authorities said. The truck was making a right turn onto Medical Center Drive when the accident occurred.
