COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : No. 12 Arkansas Gets Sloppy Win

Instead of enjoying a 24-point victory over Southeast Missouri, Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson was angry about his team’s 28 turnovers.

“I was totally upset with our basketball team,” Richardson said after No. 12 Arkansas won, 96-72, Thursday night at Pine Bluff, Ark. “It was one of the sloppiest games with the ball we’ve ever played. We’ve only averaged 12 turnovers a game against better defensive teams.”

Richardson said he could excuse his players somewhat because they had been taking semester exams and had not played since Dec. 6.

Darrell Hawkins, who made all eight of his field-goal attempts, scored 20 points to lead the Razorbacks (4-0). Arkansas forced 31 turnovers.

“You can’t win with 31 turnovers,” Southeast Missouri Coach Ron Shumate said.

Richardson said the Razorbacks’ play was good at times, “but we tried too many home run passes, like we were trying to show what kind of team we are, instead of doing the things we normally do.”

OTHER GAMES

Northwestern used a 9-0 spurt--consecutive three-pointers by Pat Baldwin, Kip Kirkpatrick and Dion Lee to build a 44-38 lead midway through the second half and went on to defeat Texas A&M;, 71-60, at Evanston, Ill. Kevin Rankin scored 18 points to lead the Wildcats (3-1). David Edwards had 16 for the Aggies (1-6). . . . Charles Outlaw scored 22 points and Jessie Drain added 17, both personal bests, as Houston (3-1) routed Texas San Antonio, 94-67, at Houston. Rob Wallace had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Roadrunners (1-4). . . . Andre Bovain scored 18 points to lead five Clemson players in double figures and the Tigers (4-0) rolled past Furman, 82-59, at Greenville, S.C. The Paladins (1-3) had 24 turnovers as Clemson had 11 steals.
