An 85-year-old man was killed and two people were injured in a fire that broke out in a high-rise retirement home in the Crenshaw district.

The fire at the Good Shepherd Manor, 4411 South 11th Ave., started about 10:05 p.m. Thursday in a third-floor unit and spread to the fourth floor of the 12-story building, forcing scores of tenants to flee to the roof for safety, fire officials said.

Seventy-two tenants who were trapped in their apartments or on the roof were evacuated by firefighters who battled the blaze for about half an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Investigators found the body of 85-year-old Royal A. Dave in his fourth-floor apartment, where he died of burns and smoke inhalation, officials said.

Several people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and two elderly women were treated at a nearby hospital. A temporary shelter was set up in a nearby church for 72 people evacuated from the building. Most residents were allowed back in their apartments within hours after the fire was extinguished.

Fire officials said the fire caused about $30,000 in structural damage to the building and about $10,000 in losses to the building’s contents.
