PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Rosas Scores During Shootout, San Clemente Boys Advance

Miklos Rosas scored during a shootout Tuesday to give San Clemente its first boys’ soccer victory over Corona del Mar since 1988 in the quarterfinals of the Marina tournament.

The score was tied, 2-2, after regulation after a goal by Rosas with three minutes remaining.

Corona del Mar (9-0-2), ranked ninth in Orange County, had chances to score late in the game but San Clemente goalkeeper Mario Garcia made three saves in the last three minutes.

Rosas made the deciding kick with the shootout tied, 4-4, for the unranked Tritons (7-1-2), who advanced to play Marina in a semifinal Saturday.

In another Marina tournament game:

Marina 3, Burbank Burroughs 0--Dan Judkins, Jose Monroy and Nathan Newton each scored for Marina in a quarterfinal victory.

In the Orange boys’ tournament:

Saddleback 7, Ocean View 2--Juan Areola scored four goals for the Roadrunners (7-2) in a quarterfinal game. Juan Maldonado added two goals and goalie Eddie Lopez had 11 saves for Saddleback, which advances to play Orange at 11:30 a.m. today. It was the second defeat of the season for Ocean View in 11 games.

Orange 2, Laguna Hills 0--Robert Rodriguez scored his 11th goal of the season and Mike Band added one for Orange (8-2-3) in a quarterfinal. Laguna Hills dropped to 2-3-4.

Troy 1, Estancia 1 (Troy wins on penalty kicks, 3-1)--Goalkeeper Brian Logan made the winning penalty kick to lead Troy (7-2-1) past Estancia (4-5-2). Troy advances to play Santa Ana at 9:45 a.m. today.

Santa Ana 2, La Habra 0--Candido Lopez and Oscar Hernandez scored to lead Santa Ana (8-1-1) to a quarterfinal victory over La Habra (4-3-2).

Foothill 2, Trabuco Hills 1--Jeff Winkle and Rick Boyes scored goals and Jason Vlcek had six saves for Foothill (6-2-2) in the consolation bracket game.

In the Ocean View girls’ tournament:

Huntington Beach 1, Mater Dei 0--With about 15 minutes remaining, Huntington Beach scored after an indirect kick by Cayce Meade. Chrissy Overton headed the ball toward the goal and the ball bounced off a Mater Dei player and into the net. The Oilers (7-3-1) advanced to the semifinals against Estancia at 9 a.m. Saturday. April O’Brien had eight saves for Huntington Beach. Mater Dei is 8-4-1.
