If you’re looking for an invigorating way to spend New Year’s Day, why not join hundreds of hearty beach-goers at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro for a first-of-the-year arctic plunge?

The Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears, a 100-member club of ocean swimmers, is sponsoring the 41st annual New Year’s Day Beach Swim. Stouthearted beach-goers who dare to dip will receive certificates as well as free hot chocolate and home-baked cupcakes.

Special awards are given for the youngest and oldest swimmers--and the bather who traveled farthest for the event. Lifeguards will be on hand.

Club President Ray Falk says ocean swimming--especially when the temperature is brisk--is “a good way to live. It’s healthy, it’s good exercise and it makes you feel good.”

For those prone to the shivers, Falk notes that the water temperatures could be as high as 60 degrees. “When it gets below 56, you can really notice the difference, but it’s comfortable 56 and up,” he said. “We really count our blessings if its 56 or warmer.”
