Santa Monica : $350,000 for Library Books
The Santa Monica-based J. Paul Getty Trust has given a $350,000 matching grant to the Los Angeles Public Library to help replace books burned at two branch libraries during the spring riots.
The grant will be used to buy books and encourage other donations toward the estimated $700,000 needed to replace holdings lost by the John Muir and Junipero Serra branch libraries in South-Central Los Angeles. Because their original sites did not meet earthquake standards, the branch libraries were operating in leased mini-mall locations when they were destroyed by fire.
