A man who apparently robbed an Oxnard fast-food restaurant was shot and killed Thursday evening by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, officials said.

The robbery occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at a Popeye’s chicken outlet on Ventura Road.

Oxnard Police Lt. Tom Cady said the shooting occurred after the suspect ran from the restaurant with money he had taken in the robbery.

Sheriff’s Deputy Roland Ogawa, who was in the parking lot, identified himself and told the suspect to stop. The suspect then fired a single shot at the deputy who returned fire, striking the man once, police said.

The suspect was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect was not identified Thursday evening.

The incident was the second shooting of a robbery suspect in a little over a month in Oxnard. On Dec. 2, convenience store owner T. Roman Paras shot and killed a 17-year-old Oxnard youth after a robbery attempt. The boy’s alleged accomplice is facing charges of murder.
