COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women Lose 4th in Row

Cal State Northridge let a six-point halftime lead evaporate in the second half Thursday and Chicago State rallied for a 60-54 women’s nonconference basketball victory.

The visiting Matadors led, 36-30, at halftime but went ice cold in the second half, shooting 24% from the field. CSUN made only seven of 29 shots after hitting 54% of its shots in the first half.

The Matadors (4-8) have lost four in a row and all three defeats on their current Illinois trip have come by six points or less.

Freshman guard Michelle Esparza scored 16 points to pace Northridge and Janel Vega added 14.

Kassandra McGehee finished with 20 points and eight rebounds for Chicago State, which outrebounded the Matadors, 48-37.

In other women’s games:

Southern California College 78, Cal Lutheran 68--Cyndi Lyons and Stacy Mounce each scored 22 points to lead Southern California over the host Regals.

Aimee Snyder led Cal Lutheran (4-7) with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Santa Barbara 70, Pierce 49--Despite 16 points and 14 rebounds from Yolanda Davidian, the host Brahmas dropped a Western State Conference game.

Pierce (5-10, 1-2 in conference play) trailed by only two points at the half but was outscored, 46-27, thereafter.

Shani Samuel also scored 16 points for Pierce, and Santa Barbara was led by Andi Brown with 17 points.

The Master’s 57, Mills 31--Audrey and Heather McMurray combined for 25 points to lead host Master’s in an NAIA District 3 game.

Deborah Prociw scored 11 points for the winners.

Canyons 70, Oxnard 48--The Cougars outrebounded the Condors, 52-27, in a WSC game. Jana Kovar led the way with 18 and Kate Stoll grabbed 15. Karen Sklar--who scored a team-high 16 points--pulled down 10.

Stoll also scored 14 points and had eight assists for Canyons (7-11, 1-2), which won despite making only one of its first 10 shots from the field. The Cougars’ Terra Bruessel recorded 11 assists.

Edith Bradley led Oxnard (3-10, 0-3) with 11 points.

Ventura 62, Santa Monica 35--In a WSC game at Santa Monica, Ventura breezed to its fifth consecutive victory.

Moorpark 86, Glendale 82--Simi Valley High graduates Tammy Pacheco and Heather Eubanks led the Raiders with 27 and 18 points, respectively, in a WSC game.

Moorpark led by 12 in the second half and held on despite eight three-point baskets by Glendale (7-8, 1-2) in the second half.

Stephanie Ball led Glendale with 22 points. Yvette Hassakoursian scored 16, including four three-point shots.

Valley 99, Compton 40--Freshman Nicole Baynes, who scored 16 points, was one of six Monarchs to score in double figures in a WSC game. Valley (16-4, 2-1) opened the game with an 18-2 run and finished with a 59.2 field-goal percentage (42 of 71), the team’s highest of the season.

Wakai Gibson led Compton (1-10, 0-2) with 27 points.

MEN

Glendale 75, Moorpark 53--Kenny Collins was four of five from the field in the second half and finished with 12 points to lead Glendale (9-9) in a Western State Conference game.
