Mike Vaughn missed an off-balance shot in the final seconds and Chapman lost to Cal State Los Angeles, 84-83, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball game Thursday at the Hutton Center.
Derek Knowles made two free throws with seven seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a one-point lead. After a Los Angeles timeout, Vaughn took the inbound pass and drove the length of the court and with about two seconds left put up a finger roll from about six feet out that hit the rim and bounced away.
Chapman (3-10, 0-1 in the CCAA) led by as many as 11 points in the second half before Los Angeles rallied. The Golden Eagles (9-2, 1-0) tied the score, 77-77, with about 1 1/2 minutes remaining.
Jeff Gardner had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers. Brian Kenney had 16 points and Richie Bethune had 15 points and eight rebounds. Knowles had 20 points and Tony McGee, who only played in the second half, and Mark Greene each had 11.
