Playa Vista

Los Angeles Councilwoman Ruth Galanter is to be commended and applauded for her intelligent and courageous decision to oppose the development plans for Playa Vista (Jan. 1). The proposed development is far too massive for the existing city; Los Angeles would lose crucial open space. I believe the development is opposed by the vast majority of residents in Galanter’s 6th District in addition to residents to surrounding districts and cities (Santa Monica and Culver City).

As an elected representative, Galanter wisely listened to the voice of the people in making her informed decision. Her opposition is a victory for democracy in which, hopefully, the voices of the people carry more weight than developers, and for Los Angeles which may finally say no to a development whose gargantuan dimensions are wrong for the city.

As residents of this city we need respite and refuge from development, not a city within a city to add the congestion and pollution, which we face daily.
