Brent Barry, son of former Golden State Warrior Rick Barry, emulated his father’s free-throw shooting style and made two underhand-style foul shots with 15 seconds left to give Oregon State a 64-63 Pacific 10 Conference victory over California on Saturday at Berkeley.

After Barry made the free throws, he fouled Lamond Murray with six seconds left. Murray missed the free throw and a 12-foot shot as time ran out.

Barry said it was fun to excite the crowd with his underhand free-throws.

“They (the crowd) didn’t see me shoot free throws last year, so it was surprising to see me chuck them up there underhanded,” Barry said.

The Beavers (6-5 overall, 2-0 in the Pacific 10) used an 11-0 run, capped by Pat Strickland’s three-point shot, to take a 15-point lead with 4:35 left in the first half.

The Golden Bears (7-3, 1-1) came back with a 10-0 run, closing the margin to 35-31 on guard K.J. Roberts’ three-point basket with six seconds left.

California continued its comeback in the second half, tying the game at 57-57 with 3:58 to play on Al Grigsby’s dunk.

Center Scott Haskin led Oregon State with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Murray led the Bears with 22 points. Cal freshman Jason Kidd had 13 points and seven assists.

California Coach Lou Campanelli said the Golden Bears were trying to get a little two-man play going with Murray and Kidd.

“Lamond got off the best shot he thought he could get. It hurt us not having a time out,” Campanelli said.

Kidd said California could learn from the game’s final play.

“It’ll help us in the long run because we’ll run into that situation again,” he said.

Washington 59, Washington State 56--Mark Pope made the winning basket with 19 seconds left at Pullman, Wash., in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for Washington (7-3). The Cougars (6-4) rallied after going scoreless for a 4:21 stretch midway through the second half. Eddie Hill’s three-point basket with 2:16 left cut the Huskies’ lead to 56-54, and Rob Corkrum made two free throws with 39 seconds left to tie the score.

Pope then regained the lead for Washington, making a layup with 19 seconds left. The Cougars failed in two attempts to inbound the ball and score in the final seconds before Washington’s Martin Keane made a free throw to end the game.

Washington played without Rich Manning, its starting center and high scorer this season with a 17.4-point average. He was sidelined because of a knee injury.

Stanford 71, Oregon 66--The Cardinal (6-7 overall) evened their Pac-10 record at 1-1 with the victory at Stanford. It was the 15th consecutive conference road loss for the Ducks (7-7 overall, 0-2 in Pac-10 play).
