A 38-year-old Rancho Palos Verdes man died Sunday night after his car hit a light pole at the El Toro Y and plunged from an overpass to the Interstate 5 center divider below, a California Highway Patrol officer said Monday.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as John Brunner, according to a coroner’s office spokesman.

Officer Angel Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Highway Patrol, said Brunner was driving on the transition overpass of the northbound I-5 to the northbound San Diego Freeway around 9:15 p.m. when his 1984 Buick drifted to the right.

“After colliding with the light pole, the car became airborne and spun in midair and landed on the center divider of the I-5 below,” Johnson said.

No other people were injured. Investigators were still trying to discover the cause of the accident.

“Either he fell asleep or there was something wrong with the vehicle,” Johnson said.
