Man Slain in What Police See as Gang Killing
An 18-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after being shot in the head in what police suspect was a gang-related murder.
Hoa Thai Tran of Garden Grove was found with a bullet wound to the head in the living room of an apartment in the 200 block of Shannon Street at 2:35 p.m. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust said.
Hong Le, who lives in the apartment, told police that Tran appeared at the door of the apartment about 2 p.m. looking for her son, who she said was not home. Le said she then left the apartment to go shopping.
When she returned 30 minutes later, she discovered Tran inside her home with the head wound, Faust said.
Police did not know how Tran got inside the apartment.
“A motive is not known at this time, but gang investigators are working the case,” Faust said.
