Claremont : New Use for GOP Offices

Share

The building that housed Republican Party offices at 111 Harvard Avenue will become retail space, the City Council decided Tuesday after heated debate.

The council voted 3 to 2 to turn the former storefront office into retail space because the GOP headquarters had functioned more as a retail shop than as a professional office.

Council members Algird G. Leiga and Nicholas L. Presecan disagreed, saying that as a nonprofit organization, the former Republican Headquarters did not engage in retail activity but collected donations. Leiga said the decision will have a chilling effect on future political activity.

The office is in the Claremont Village Overlay District, which was created to increase the number of shops in the historic district.
