Sierra Madre : City to Buy Chlorinator
To meet a state compliance order for water quality, the City Council authorized purchase of a $15,000 chlorine station with a gas chlorinator, to be installed at the city’s corporate yards.
The chlorine will kill coliform and other bacteria and ensure that Sierra Madre’s water supply meets Environmental Protection Agency federal water standards.
After several samples recently failed to pass new criteria, the city was fined $100 and ordered to begin chlorinating.
Public Works Director Kev Tcharkhoutian said he will negotiate with the State Office of Drinking Water to reduce the recommended concentration of chlorine from 0.5 to .2 parts per million.
He said the lower level of chlorine will keep the water safe to drink but will prevent customers from experiencing any objectionable tastes and odors.
