A 15-year-old boy suffered first-degree burns to his back and smoke inhalation Saturday when a fire erupted in the bedroom of his Canoga Park home, apparently ignited by a cigarette, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Flames broke out at a house in the 7900 block of Moorcroft Avenue about 3:30 a.m., spokesman Mike Little said.

The youth was treated at a nearby hospital and released, and two other children and two adults were examined for possible smoke inhalation.

The fire destroyed the bedroom and caused severe smoke damage throughout the house, displacing the family and causing an estimated $80,000 damage to the structure and contents, Little said.
