South Carolina Coach Is Stepping Down
Steve Newton, basketball coach at South Carolina, resigned Monday as the school released a report outlining five NCAA recruiting violations.
Newton, in his second season, will become an assistant athletic director, effective May 31, for the remaining two years of his $102,000-a-year contract.
Assistants James Holland and Craig Morris also resigned.
“It simply is not possible for this staff to continue here in the best interests of all involved,” Newton said.
Three violations involve the recruiting of Cortez Barnes, a 6-foot-7 forward junior college transfer from Wichita, Kan. Two others involve the recruiting of 6-10 recruit William Cunningham of Augusta, Ga.
“They were isolated and certainly not part of a pattern of misconduct on the part of the coaching staff,” Athletic Director Mike McGee said.
