About 30 county workers picketed outside the government center during their lunch hour Tuesday in an effort to pressure top county officials not to slash their work hours.

The employees, mostly secretaries and other clerical employees, said they cannot afford to switch to a four-day workweek--as proposed by county executives searching for ways to save money in the wake of the state fiscal problems.

“We want to send a firm message to management that we don’t want a furlough,” said Pam Briscoe, one of the organizers of the protest. “They are taking food out of our mouths at this point.”

“If we lose time, we lose money,” said Elizabeth Renteria, a legal processor who works in the district attorney’s office. “We are worried that we will not be able to feed or house our children.”

Although the supervisors gave the county chief administrative officer the approval last week to explore the possibility of cutting workers’ hours, Supervisor John K. Flynn said the proposed four-day workweek is far from being a done deal.

“It’s only an idea,” Flynn said.
