COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cheaney Scores 33 as Indiana Wins

Calbert Cheaney scored 33 points Tuesday night and No. 2 Indiana held Big Ten scoring leader Glenn Robinson to three points in the last eight minutes in beating No. 13 Purdue, 74-65, at West Lafayette, Ind.

Robinson’s last basket cut Indiana’s lead--once as big as 15--to 62-57 with just over three minutes remaining. But the Purdue sophomore picked up his fourth foul seconds later, and the Hoosiers scored 10 of their final 12 points on free throws.

After a basket by Matt Painter brought Purdue (11-3, 2-3)) within 66-59, the Boilermakers fouled Indiana (16-2, 5-0) every possession. But Indiana sank six straight free throws at the end.

Maryland 89, No. 12 Oklahoma 78--Maryland shut down the Sooners’ high-powered offense and Evers Burns scored 22 points as the Terrapins halted a four-game losing streak in a nonconference game at Baltimore.

Maryland (9-5) limited Oklahoma to 31 points in the first half. The Sooners (12-4), who came in with a nation-best 97.7 points per game average, made only 22 of 63 shots (35%).

No. 4 Kentucky 73, Alabama 59--Jamal Mashburn scored 24 points and the Wildcats (12-1, 3-1) held the Crimson Tide (9-5, 2-3) without a field goal for nine minutes in the second half in a Southeastern Conference game at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

No. 15 UNLV 98, Texas A&M; 96--J.R. Rider scored a career-high 38 points and Dexter Boney had eight of his 18 in overtime as the Runnin’ Rebels (10-1) held off the Aggies (5-9) in a nonconference game at Las Vegas.

No. 9 Cincinnati 103, Chicago State 43--Center Corie Blount scored a 20 points in his first home game of the season as the Bearcats routed Chicago State (2-14) in a nonconference game at Cincinnati. Blount, who rejoined the Bearcats (12-1) Saturday after the NCAA restored his eligibility, had 15 points, four steals and one blocked shot in the first half.

No. 10 Seton Hall 66, Villanova 61--The Pirates (15-2, 5-1) sank 12 of 14 free throws in overtime to hold off the Wildcats (5-7, 1-5) in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

La Salle (7-7), defeated crosstown rival St. Joseph’s (9-3) 66-53 and Temple (8-3) defeated Penn (9-3), 72-58, at Philadelphia.
