Rafael Ruelas Stops Burgos With First-Round Knockout
Rafael Ruelas of Arleta, the World Boxing Council’s top-ranked contender, knocked out overmatched Roberto Burgos of Tucson in the first round of a lightweight bout Tuesday night in Boise, Ida.
Ruelas (35-1, 28 knockouts) ripped Burgos with left hooks from the start and brought his right hand into the action midway through the round.
In the final minute, Ruelas opened up and began battering Burgos at will. A right to Burgos’ jaw staggered him and a left hook to the body sent Burgos to the mat, where he was counted out.
It was the 10th first-round knockout for Ruelas, 22.
Both fighters weighed in at 135 pounds.
