Azusa : Development Plans OKd
The City Council voted unanimously to approve preliminary plans to develop the vacant, 3.5-acre Centennial Square site.
The city-owned property between Azusa and San Gabriel avenues has been vacant since 1989, when the city began acquiring the land and demolished existing buildings. In 1989, the recession scuttled plans to build a 50,000-square-foot retail and office center at the site.
The new plan calls for retail or office buildings and one or two restaurants. In addition, the Light and Water Department will expand to the rear portion of the site.
The Redevelopment Agency has invested about $5 million in the project.
Staff will immediately begin to look for a restaurant to move into the site, and the Light and Water Department will be relocated.
